Pre-departure
Here is a list of the most commonly asked questions about the process and your preparation before you come to China. If you can’t find the answer you’re looking for contact us, we’ll be happy to help!
Go Abroad China will send you a comprehensive pre-departure guide with a detailed list of what to bring when you come. Here are some things to think about in the meantime.
- Bring your preferred and required medication with you as well as copies of your prescriptions. Although pharmacies and western medicines are available in China, we strongly recommend you bring all your prescription medication (including medical records that support these medications) and your preferred over-the-counter medication with you, in quantities that will last for your entire stay.
- Bring your preferred toiletries. If you have a preference for specific brands of toiletries such as soaps, shampoos, deodorants or antiperspirants, body lotions, and toothpaste, bring them with you as they can be difficult to find in China. Make sure to bring enough to last your entire stay.
- Pay particular attention to your wardrobe for the trip. You’ll want to bring comfortable, conservative clothing suitable for the weather in your chosen city. Remember, clothes and shoes are inexpensive and widely available in China. However, larger sizes can be difficult to find.
Go Abroad China recommends that you arrive on the specified arrival dates for each program, which are selected to allow you a few days to allow you a few days to settle into your accommodation, start making new friends, and to explore your local area! However, if you need to arrive before the program start date, or you want to extend your stay after the program officially ends, this can be arranged for a small additional fee.
Your baggage limitations will depend on the airline you fly to China on. Each airline has different requirements and may change their policies without notice. Never assume that the aircraft will have enough storage space on board.
In general (non-airline specific);
- International flights typically have the same size and weight luggage allowances but may have different allocations for the number of pieces of luggage that can be checked in.
- The usual allowance for check-in baggage is as follows:
- two pieces (usually one piece for the UK and Australia)
- Maximum weight of 50 or 70 pounds (or 7kg) per bag (depending on your airline)
- The largest piece of luggage cannot exceed 62” in any dimension, and the second piece of luggage cannot exceed 55” in any dimension.
- The allowance for carry-on baggage is as follows:
- Some U.S. carriers allow two2 bags weighing up to 50 pounds per bag (some less), which mustn’t exceed 22″x 9″ x 14″
- Airlines based outside of North America may only allow one carry-on bag not to exceed 11 pounds and 22″x 9″ x 14″
Baggage limits and allowances depend on your chosen airline carrier and the destination country. Remember to confirm their specific luggage requirements with them and make additional arrangements if you require more baggage allowance.
